Addressing Common AC Cooling Problems

Spring is here and that means sunny skies and warm temperatures. While some days can be hotter than others, we find ourselves relying on our AC units to keep temperatures in our home cool and comfortable. Keeping your AC unit in good condition is key to ensuring it provides the right amount of cooling in your home.

If your homes AC unit has been properly serviced, there are still common issues that can pop up from time to time. Some of these issues require the care and knowledge of an HVAC expert…that’s where we come in! Let’s dive into some of the common AC unit issues and how to deal with them.

Dirty air filters – these should be changed every 90 days. Air filters catch dirt, dust, dander and other particles that make their way into your HVAC unit. If your filters are dirty the flow of cool air will be blocked making your AC unit work harder or even shut down. Clean filters are essential to keeping your air safe and to boost normal airflow throughout your home.

Low or leaky refrigerant – Having low or leaky AC refrigerant levels is a problem that can become serious if you don’t keep an eye on it. When levels are low, your AC unit loses the ability to transfer heat from the inside of your home to the outside. Air that blows over your AC coils will no longer cool properly, causing your vents to start circulating air and for temperatures to fluctuate. If there is a leak in your refrigerant, this must be checked out immediately as AC refrigerant is highly toxic to humans and animals.

Incorrect thermostat settings – your thermostat may be the issue with your AC unit. If your thermostat isn’t working right, your AC unit may not turn off and on as it should causing cooling and performance issues. Check to see if your thermostat’s display is lit as this could be an indication your thermostat cannot signal the AC to turn on. The placement of your thermostat could be a culprit to inaccurately regulate the temperature in your home. Consider the position placement when installing a thermostat.
